  Happy New Year 2013

iSTAR5  - Some highlights of the year – 2012 (to be continued !)

The best team to work with:
The iSTAR team – thank you all for making the project and programs and workshops and camps possible! – And to the children, youth, and families that we work with – we dedicate to our efforts to you – and to more communities in 2013. And to all of our supporters – thank you.

Special thanks to Steve Gross, Tom Wyman, Cheri Daily, Valoree Dowell, and Troy D’Ambrosio, and the Lassonde Center team, and Taylor Bench and Matt Gardner. Thanks to Temple Grandin and Rosalie Winard for their support.

Book:
Different…Not Less

An important publication by Temple Grandin that changes the outlook on living on the spectrum across the life course – and for the better – and hope for the future. Different...Not Less shows how, with work, each of the contributors in her book:
  • Found invaluable mentors
  • Learned skills necessary for employment when young
  • Became successfully employed
  • Developed self-confidence
  • Faced the challenges of forming and maintaining relationships, and sometimes raising families

Journal:
Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders

After conducting a major review of the literature for the iSTAR project, it is clear that The Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders carries a significant load of the scholarship related to ASD. JADD is the leading peer-reviewed, scholarly periodical focusing on all aspects of autism spectrum disorders and related developmental disabilities. Published monthly, JADD is committed to advancing the understanding of autism, including potential causes and prevalence (e.g., genetic, immunological, environmental); diagnosis advancements; and effective clinical care, education, and treatment for all individuals. Studies of diagnostic reliability and validity, psychotherapeutic and psychopharmacological treatment efficacy, and mental health services effectiveness are encouraged. JADD also seeks to promote the well-being of children and families by publishing scholarly papers on such subjects as health policy, legislation, advocacy, culture and society, and service provision as they pertain to the mental health of children and families.
